Wigan Athletic have completed the free transfer signing of defender Adrian Lopez from Deportivo La Coruna.

The 23-year-old centre-back, better known as Piscu, has signed a deal until the end of the current season at the DW Stadium after Fifa finally ratified his status as a free agent.

The Latics had been keen on signing Piscu since the summer, when he left Deportivo after his contract had expired at the end of the season but have had to wait until his international clearance to play in England was received.

“We've been waiting a while now for the FIFA resolution," manager Roberto Martinez told the club’s official website.

“It's great to see Adrian's desire to play for Wigan Athletic can finally be fulfilled.

"He is a player with a fantastic football education, coming through the ranks of Deportivo La Coruña and playing for Spain at Under-19 and Under-21 level, which gives him a unique development, and makes him a defender with real potential.

"He is a defender who is very calm under pressure, and is a great reader of the game, and I am confident he will be able to fulfill his potential at Wigan. He is desperate to help the squad to win games for the club."

Piscu made his first-team debut at Deportivo in 2007 having previously played for the ‘B’ team and has played twice for the Spain Under-21’s.

The defender, who will wear the No.24 shirt, will be hoping to go straight into the squad for the match against Newcastle United on January 2.
